Tips for effective content writing

When people think of marketing and promoting, they will usually think in terms of visuals. However, you should not neglect the quality of the writing that goes with the visuals as this could put people off if there are obvious grammatical errors or the wording feels clunky. Here are a few tips for effective content writing.

Who are you writing for?

One way to focus your content writing is to imagine who is likely to be reading what you are writing. What questions would this person ask? What do they want? What information are they likely to know already? By answering these questions, it makes it easier to then deliver the information that these people want.

Keep it simple

In some cases, it may be impossible to avoid technical information. In an ideal scenario you should be able to be concise and use reasonably simple language. Bullet points can also be effective in giving people the information they need without using too many words.

Keep it positive

Be wary of the kind of language you use. If you are promoting a product or service then ideally you want to avoid being too self-deprecating. By contrast, you should also avoid either directly or indirectly having a go at your possible competition as people may be put off.

That being said, you should also avoid using overly hyperbolic language. Your product may be effective in slicing fruit but you had better be sure before you tell someone “this is the best invention for slicing fruit in the world ever!”

If you’re not sure, get feedback

Before you post your website content, article or social media post, it is worth running it by someone else. What may make sense to you may seem confusing to someone else. Ask them if the content gives them the information they need- for example if you’re promoting an event is it clear where and when the event takes place?

If you are by yourself then it is worth giving yourself a bit of space before posting something. If you have time, get some food or go away from the computer for a second. After that, read through your work again. This will give you the chance to look over what you have written and whether or not what you are posting makes sense.

Is your content SEO enhanced?

When it comes to content marketing, it is not just the quality of the writing (although that is obviously important). You should also use appropriate keywords so that people can find it- this also applies to social media posts, captions on pictures or the descriptions on videos that you upload.
